Jersey Shore’s Sandy Recovery Begins (Forbes)
The Jersey Shore is, like so many oceanfront communities, resilient. And so it
was heartening, but not completely surprising, to find many of these
towns?including those close to where I grew up, including Ocean Grove, Belmar
and the recently revived Asbury Park?buzzing with recovery activities (and the
sound of generators) over the weekend. Sand was bulldozed from buried streets,
water pumped from houses just steps from the shore, broken boardwalk boards
were collected in Dumpsters, and some business, less hard hit, opened with
limited (generator-powered) service, creating a much-needed respite for
communities still in the dark.
